Qi (chi) is the bio-electric energy which flows through our bodies and is controlled by the breath. [Thus, in the first lessons we learn is how to breathe with our abdomen.]
‘Gong’ means ‘work’, hence Breath Work is instrumental in keeping the flow of fluids and energy through our body.
What are the goals of our Qigong practice? We want to turn our bodies into hydraulic powerhouses. We must keep the energy and fluids in our bodies moving.
Qigong movements strengthen and stabilize our bodies by:
- Working our joints, ligaments, and tendons.
- Improving our balance by strengthening the ankles.
- Moving fluids and qi through our body.
- Allowing full and relaxed breathing.
- Flexing the spine.
Qigong is different from going to the gym. It engages the mind as well as the body. Breathing and visualization help calm the mind and the nervous system. This leads to a positive outlook and generally calmer attitude toward life. Qigong builds awareness and intent (Yi):
- Intent (Yi): The movements appear simple, but once you begin doing them you realize that you must control simultaneously different parts of your body in different ways.
- Awareness: While moving, you observe your breath and coordinate it with your movements.
- Visualization: Qi is also moved with your mind as well as your body. You do this by visualizing the energy moving through your body, flowing through your organs and limbs, energizing and cleaning them.
Thus, simple movements help restore our bodies to a strong flexible state, while enhancing concentration, focus, and an intentional life.
