In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), the concept of the Eight Extraordinary Vessels, also known as the Eight Extraordinary Meridians or the Eight Extraordinary Channels, is an advanced aspect of the meridian system. These vessels are considered to be deep reservoirs of energy and play a unique role in regulating the flow of Qi (vital energy) and blood in the body. Here are the names of the Eight Extraordinary Vessels:

  1. Ren Mai (Conception Vessel): It runs along the midline of the front of the body and is associated with reproductive and hormonal functions.
  2. Du Mai (Governing Vessel): It runs along the midline of the back of the body and is associated with the central nervous system and the regulation of Yang energy.
  3. Chong Mai (Thrusting Vessel): It is an interior vessel that is considered the origin of all the meridians. It influences blood circulation, nourishment, and reproductive functions.
  4. Dai Mai (Belt Vessel): It encircles the waist like a belt and regulates the movement of Qi between the upper and lower parts of the body. It is often associated with musculoskeletal disorders.
  5. Yang Qiao Mai (Yang Heel Vessel): It connects the outer edge of the foot and runs up the back of the leg, influencing balance and the ability to take action.
  6. Yin Qiao Mai (Yin Heel Vessel): It connects the inner edge of the foot and runs up the inner leg, influencing emotional and psychological aspects, as well as the regulation of Yin energy.
  7. Yin Wei Mai (Yin Linking Vessel): It is an interior vessel that links all the Yin meridians. It is associated with emotional well-being, mental stability, and the integration of emotions.
  8. Yang Wei Mai (Yang Linking Vessel): It is an interior vessel that links all the Yang meridians. It is associated with musculoskeletal functions, coordination, and the integration of physical movements.

These vessels are considered to be extraordinary because they have a broader and deeper influence on the body compared to the primary meridians. They are often used in TCM to treat complex and chronic conditions and to harmonize and balance the flow of Qi and blood throughout the body.

The key to opening and filling the Vessels is in the correct alignment of the joints. It is imperative that you take the time to correctly align the body position before moving on to the next position or holding the position for an extended period
of time.

The first step is to hold each position for three breaths. Be sure you set your body in the correct position before you start counting your breaths. The breathing process is as
follows:

Opening The 8 Vessels
1. Inhale through the center of the palms (Labor Point) into the lower abdomen.
2. Exhale from the lower abdomen out of the bottom of the feet
(Bubbling Well).
3. Inhale through the Bubbling Well into the lower abdomen.
4. Exhale from the lower abdomen out of the center of the palms.

This completes one breath cycle.

Filling The 8 Vessels
After opening the 8 Vessels daily for 108 days, you may now begin to fill the 8 Vessels. Hold each position for 1 to 5 minutes. Be sure to maintain correct position and breathing.
