What is Tai Chi Walking
Tai Chi Walking is one of the foundations of Tai Chi, a basic skill in learning any Tai Chi form. Walking with balance, control, and grace carries over into our daily lives, allowing us to perform common activities with security and confidence.
Walking adheres to the principles of Tai Chi.
In Tai Chi our feet are connected solidly to the earth:
Principle: Never be off Balance
- Stand like a Mountain; Move like a River.
In ordinary walking we commit our bodies and then move our feet to catch ourselves. In Tai Chi we always make certain that we have a good connection with the earth before committing our weight.
Principle: Feet – Waist – Hands
Once we are connect to the earth, we use our feet to move our waist. The energy moves from our feet through our waist and body aren is expressed in the hands.
Principle: Be Continuously Be Moving
The world is continually in flux. Energy moves, flows, and transforms. When practicing, youi are like water. If you stop moving, the energy will stagnate. To maintian grace and connection with the transforming world you must be like the current of a river or the ebb and flow of a wave.
Learning: Some Robotic Movement Required
When we teach you the movements, we go in steps. This allows the movements to be broken down in parts, assuring you do not miss any of the steps.
Once you are secure in the memorization of the movement, you can work on smoothing our the movements.
